KZN man found dead after going for a walk on the beach

Police in Amanzimtoti have opened an inquest after a man's body was discovered in the sand dunes of Winklespruit Beach.

Leon du Preez (60), who went for a walk to Winklespruit Beach and never returned, was found dead in sand dunes on the beach two days later.

According to Amanzimtoti Police Station’s communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, the man went for a walk on August 19 at about 12:00 and never returned. A missing persons report was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS.

“Yesterday, August 21, at around 16:45, the body of the deceased was found in the dunes at Winklespruit Beach by a friend of the family who was part of the search party,” she said.

He was declared dead on arrival by the paramedics.

Van der Spuy said a case of inquest was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS for further investigation.

Facebook post by Ground Zero Search and Rescue read, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unfortunate passing of Mr Du Preez. Our hearts are heavy as we extend our sincere condolences to his beloved family, especially his daughter Leandre.”

The post also thanked all role-players for their assistance.
