KZN MEC receives loaded message, bullet left at Durban office door

Since assuming office seven months ago, two bullets have been found at KZN Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer’s office door.

KZN Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer has vowed to continue rooting out corruption within the department despite alleged threats on his life.

On Monday, a second bullet was left at his Durban office door.

“The bullet was found by staff members who had been reporting to the office in the morning, as per usual,” says provincial department spokesperson Steve Bhengu.

Meyer, who assumed office in June 2024, has been instrumental in rooting out the rot in the department by bringing corruption and fraud charges against a number of senior officials who are now facing disciplinary processes. Some of the officials have been dismissed.

He has also been challenging the ‘construction mafia’ which was holding KZN hostage by demanding tenders with threats of violence.

Bhengu says this is the second bullet incident involving Meyer and that the matter has been reported to the SAPS.

“The first was shortly after coming into office last year on the back of declaring war against construction mafias.

“It is unfortunate that this latest incident takes place as the MEC [and] office staff were returning to work after hosting a successful a two-day Build KZN Better conference at the Durban International Convention Centre where MEC Meyer had reiterated that the event will not be an envelope exchange platform for underhanded deals.

“MEC Meyer is adamant that no amount of threats will deter him from rooting out corruption and malfeasance within the department. The MEC remains committed to continuing in the positive trajectory that KZN Public Works and Infrastructure finds itself in which will see it being a department that works for the people of KZN once again,” says Bhengu.
