KZN metro cop caught with cocaine

A metro cop from Wentworth, KwaZulu-Natal, has been caught allegedly packing cocaine by the Hawks, metro police and the City Investigations and Integrity Unit (CIIU) last night.

According to Jessie Singh of the eThekwini Municipality, the joint operation was sparked by to a tip-off received about a week ago, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

The cop has previously been caught on the wrong side of the law and is currently out on bail for previous offences. According to official police reports, the suspect is expected to appear in court today. The estimated street value of the drugs is at R35 000.

Unconfirmed reports alleged a second man believed to be the policeman’s brother was also arrested for drug dealing. However, this has not yet been confirmed.

Lieutenant Mbaso Gumede of Wentworth police said members were working round the clock to eradicate drugs in the community. “The youth are our main concern, as they are directly affected by the scourge of drugs in Wentworth. Whoever is caught dealing or doing drugs will be dealt with in a severe manner,” he said.

A resident of the area, who preferred to remain anonymous, said: “Drugs have become a norm in the community. We are surrounded by it as the dealers and users are our neighbours, but to hear that a policeman was the culprit is sad.”

In a separate incident, a police officer and his accomplice were arrested after being found in possession of a stolen vehicle in Boksburg in May.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the vehicle that was stolen at around 5am, was recovered the same morning at around 7am by metro police and a vehicle tracking company.

“The recovered vehicle disappeared from a yard in Dawn Park, and once the tracker was activated, a joint effort by the EMPD Geluksdal Precinct officers and the tracking company officials resulted in the suspects being located and cornered along Ncane Street in Langaville,” added Kgasago.

He said one of the suspects was identified as a law enforcer believed to be stationed in Tsakane. Both suspects were charged for possession of a stolen vehicle. They will appear in the Tsakane Magistrates’ Court.
