KZN premier announces skills audit for elected councillors
The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) will roll out the integrated councillor induction programme.
Premier Sihle Zikalala has scheduled two capacity building programmes that aim to guide, as well as induct, councillors in their new roles and responsibilities.
Zikalala announced this during a virtual media briefing on the recent development in the province on Monday, November 8.
He said the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) advised that, immediately after the elections, it would undertake a skills audit of all councillors.
“The purpose of the skills audit is to identify councillors experience and office held, years of experience in local government, employment, educational profile, and demographic information. The skills audit provides valuable information towards the identification of training needs and the customisation of capacity building initiatives,” said Zikalala.
He added that COGTA will conduct sector based councillor orientation workshops.
“The programmes will provide councillors with an overview of the local government environment that will cover roles and responsibilities, policy and legal framework and various municipal processes,” he said.
