In a media statement, the South African Weather Service (Saws) warned residents to brace for the possibility of severe thunderstorms, which may cause difficult driving conditions on dirt roads.

It said the western parts of the province will be mainly affected and the stormy weather is expected throughout the day and into Saturday night.

“These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours, strong winds, hail and excessive lightning, which may result in localised impacts,” Saws said.

The main areas expected to be affected by the approaching thunderstorms are: Alfred Duma Indaka, Alfred Duma Ladysmith, Dannhauser, Dr N. Dlamini-Zuma – Underberg, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele Escourt, Inkosi Langalibalele Sobabili, Mpofana Giants Castle, Mpofana Mooi River, Newcastle, Okhahlamba, uMngeni, Umzimkhulu.

Saws also advised that residents take caution when travelling during stormy weather as it may cause damage to infrastructure.

“Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes.
