Lifeguards save 6 from water at non-bathing Baggies Beach
Six people were rescued from the water at Baggies Beach after lifeguards mounted a swift, co-ordinated response at the non-bathing area.
At about 14:55 yesterday, a report was received of multiple people in distress in the water at Baggies Beach on the south coast of KZN, a designated non-bathing area.
South Coast Sun reports that lifeguards stationed at Doonside Beach responded immediately, while additional lifeguards from Amanzimtoti Beach were dispatched to assist.
Rescue operations
Upon arrival, two of the six individuals involved had already been safely removed from the water and were receiving medical attention on the beach from lifeguards.
The boat rescue team continued search-and-rescue operations and successfully retrieved the remaining four individuals from the water.
Medical response
A total of four patients required further medical assessment and treatment. ALS Paramedics and ER24 arrived on scene, along with members of the media.
All patients were assessed, treated and stabilised on scene before being handed over to paramedics in a stable condition.
Outcome
The D5 Lifeguards displayed a high level of professionalism, skill and co-ordinated teamwork throughout the operation. Their swift response resulted in the successful rescue and stabilisation of all six individuals.
No fatalities were reported.
