Limpopo domestic dispute ends in house fire, shooting and suicide

An elderly man (75) is said to have carried out several crimes, including the attempted murder of his wife, as well as arson before taking his own life.

Limpopo police have opened an inquest docket following a domestic violence-related incident that led to the death of an elderly man.

According to Polokwane Review, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the 75-year-old suspect was searching for a man from who he had allegedly bought bricks.

“The suspect was driving late on Friday night when he came across the victim in his own vehicle. Without saying anything, the suspect shot the victim in the upper body before the victim drove to the nearest hospital,” Ledwaba adds.

The suspect then, according to police, returned home, doused his house in a flammable liquid, and set it alight.

“He proceeded to another room where his wife was sleeping, woke her up, and threatened to kill her before instructing her to get inside the burning house with him,” Ledwaba says.

He adds the suspect’s wife managed to escape, but was shot at multiple times, allegedly by her husband, without success.

“The suspect later shot himself and died on the scene. We urge anyone experiencing gender-based or domestic violence to seek assistance from professionals,” Ledwaba says, adding that police investigations continue.
