Limpopo mother arrested after child (3) found dead
An investigation has been launched into a child's death after his mentally ill mother was arrested.
Police in Thohoyandou are investigating the death of a three-year-old boy after his body was found inside a house in Tshififi village in Limpopo on Sunday night.
Polokwane Review reports that, according to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, residents alerted authorities to a disturbance from a nearby home. When police arrived, they found several community members outside the property. Inside, officers discovered the child’s body lying on the floor with visible injuries to the upper body.
“The boy’s 38-year-old mother was arrested following the discovery. Neighbours and relatives had reportedly attempted to intervene but were unable to enter the locked room until community members forced the door open. Sadly, by the time they gained access, the child had already passed away,” says Ledwaba.
Emergency services later confirmed the child’s death. The suspect, who is believed to suffer from a mental health condition, was taken into custody under police supervision and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
She is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on a murder charge.
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
