Lion interrupts international guests’ sunset picnic at Londolozi
International guests were in for a surprise when they arrived at their picnic spot only to find a male lion inspecting the set-up.

On a couple’s final evening at the Londolozi Game Reserve in November 2020, employees decided to make it extra special for them by setting up a drinks stop on the banks of the Sand River.
Before ranger Chris Taylor and tracker, Euce Madonsela arrived with the couple, they were notified by their team that a male lion was spotted near the river.
“With the river being relatively wide and quite full of vegetation in the area, it would put the lion at a safe enough distance to view while still on foot,” Taylor said in his blog.
He told the guests that a lion had been spotted in the vicinity, only to then spot the lion slowly making its way towards them.
“After a long pause, the lion continued to approach us and stroll down into the gully, past our vehicles that we were safely seated in and onward towards the drinks and snacks table,” he said.
“With a clear interest in all the goodies on offer, the lion inspected the table for a few short moments, sniffing cautiously, then deciding to carry on walking downstream.”
The staff, along with the couple all had to wait in the vehicle while Taylor and Madonsela inspected the area, ensuring that the animal kept a safe distance.
Once they were completely satisfied, everyone got to enjoy the refreshments, and also reflect on the spectacular sighting and experience.
