LISTEN: ‘Amapiano’ rocks iPhone ringtone

It was mastered by Durban disc jockey Jashen Govindsamy, known as DJ Jashmir.

Jashmir used the default phone ringtone and mixed it with the ‘amapiano’ style of dance, creating a uniquely South African sound.

It has taken the internet by storm, garnering more than a million views on the popular TikTok app.

The song begins with the standard ringtone and then builds up to a rhythmic dance tune.

‘Amapiano’ is a sub-genre of house and kwaito music.

“I was playing around with beats for fun and decided to play around with the iPhone ringtone sample.

“I heard a car drive passed and they were playing ‘amapiano’, so I immediately got the idea of fusing the genre with the famous ringtone and creating a hit dance song,” said Jashmir.

The video went viral just days after he posted it on his TikTok page, which caught the attention of TikTok South Africa and the #AmaiPhone was born

AmaiPhone is not Jashmir’s first video to go viral.

He also remixed a video into a song and created the #DontDrinkAndDriveChallenge, which attracted about 500 000 views.

Jashmir says he is inspired by the joy of bringing people together by making something fun.
