Live grenade and unlicenced firearms recovered in Pretoria

Five suspects were found in possession of a live Phosphor grenade in the Garsfontein area.

The Tshwane district, including various units of police and law enforcement agencies, conducted multi-disciplinary operations that included Vhuthu Hawe and High Density from Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday.

Some of the major arrests included five men who were arrested for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition in Garsfontein.

Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said one live white Phosphor grenade was recovered during the arrest.

In Rietgat, police confiscated seven stolen and hijacked vehicles that included a Hyundai truck H100 and a Hyundai Accent.

An additional three vehicles in Mamelodi East were recovered: a grey Hyundai, white Kia, and grey Golf 7, Selepe said.

“About 12 illegal shebeens were shut down and 22 people were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol.”

A dagga plant was also discovered in Pretoria West during the operation.

Other crimes include possession of drugs, common robbery, undocumented persons, malicious damage to property, illegal possession of a firearm, drunk driving, contravention of the disaster management act, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, contravention of road traffic act, possession of suspected stolen goods, murder, reckless driving, attempted business robbery, contravention of a protection order, common assault, theft, common robbery, dealing in liquor without a licence, shoplifting, carjacking, and attempted murder.

The high density operation across Pretoria led to over 400 arrests.

The acting district commissioner Brigadier Thine applauded all law enforcement agencies for their willingness and effort during the operation and their approach to fight against crime.
