Load-shedding threat returns after five units trip

Eskom has warned that load-shedding might be implemented at short notice if any more generating units fail.

Five units tripped at Kriel Power Station this morning, increasing the possibility that South Africans will once again have to deal with load-shedding.

Eskom says that two electrical faults early this morning caused the generating units to trip. It is suspected that the faults may be related to heavy mist. It resulted in the loss of 2 000MW.

The power utility says that other generating units are expected to return to service today, but if anything goes wrong, load-shedding will have to be implemented.

Currently, 1 018MW is out on planned maintenance while 17 022MW is unavailable due to breakdowns.
