Local election results to be announced tomorrow – IEC

The IEC has ordered recounts in five wards as it finalises the election results.

South Africans will know tomorrow (November 8) how their votes have shaped the country’s local political landscape when the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) declares the final results of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The results will be announced at 18:00, IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya said, as the commission completes the final stages of processing.

By yesterday (November 6), when objections closed at 17:00, the IEC had received 197 objections from political parties and independent candidates.

Moepya said that of the 197 objections, 54 had been dismissed after the IEC investigated them and found them to have no merit.

“Eight were withdrawn, and two upheld,” he said.

Moepya explained that the two upheld objections were found to have an impact on the outcome, and they are being addressed.

“The objectors in these instances have either been notified or are receiving that correspondence,” he said.

He added that recapturing will be undertaken shortly. To address these upheld objections, one edit window has been ordered, along with recounts across five wards.

Recounts ordered across five wards

Recounts have also been ordered for five wards:

  • City of Tshwane: Ward 57
  • City of Tshwane: Ward 102
  • Mangaung metro: Ward 19
  • Thaba Chweu Local Municipality: Ward 4
  • Breede Valley Local Municipality: Ward 12

Results processing has been finalised in the Free State, Mpumalanga, the Northern Cape, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, and Limpopo.

The remaining three provinces are in the final leg of their results processing as follows:

  • Gauteng: Results processing is pending finalisation in Emfuleni, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni municipalities.
  • North West: Results processing is pending finalisation in Rustenburg municipality.
  • KZN: Results processing is pending finalisation in Msunduzi and eThekwini municipalities.

These municipalities will finalise results by this evening (November 7).
