Lucky to be alive: Mossel Bay shooting survivor recounts night of horror

A Mossel Bay man who was shot in the face in Asla Park says he feels lucky to be alive after his friend was killed.

The man who survived a gunshot to the face while his friend was killed by a shot to the chest in Adriaans Avenue, Asla Park in Mossel Bay, on October 18, said he feels lucky to be alive.

According to Mossel Bay Advertiser, the man (35), who has asked not to be named for fear of his safety, said he had been watching soccer with several friends the night he was shot and his new friend, Vuyisile Makhasi (35), died.

He said Makhasi had only been in Mossel Bay for a short time, having moved from Gauteng three weeks earlier.

Shots fired during soccer evening

The man told Mossel Bay Advertiser that Makhasi had been sweeping near the front door when several shots suddenly rang out. He said he saw Makhasi fall to the floor.

“I knew I had been injured, because I was bleeding from my face, but I didn’t know at that stage how I had been hurt,” he said.

Makhasi was on the floor with the gunshot wound to his chest, still alive. The man and a few other friends rushed Makhasi to hospital, where he was later declared dead.

“It was only when I was in the hospital that I found out I had been shot in the face,” he said.

It is understood that the bullet entered through his right nostril and exited through his left cheek.

‘Lucky to be alive’

“The doctor told me there was not too much damage. The pain has lessened since the week after the shooting. I have nightmares from the shooting,” he said.

He added that he believes the investigating officer has a strong handle on the case.

Makhasi’s family was contacted for comment, but no response had been received by the time of going to press.

KwaNonqaba police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp previously told Mossel Bay Advertiser that a case of murder and attempted murder is under investigation under detective Sergeant José Cunha.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact Cunha on 082 334 7566.
