Man allegedly kills daughter, attempts suicide

A 29-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly killed his 5-year-old daughter in the Aureus area of Randfontein, on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst said police were called to the scene yesterday at about 9.40pm. Upon arrival they were shown the body of the child, Randfontein Heraldreported.

“The suspect was also on the scene and arrested. It is alleged the victim was murdered, and the suspect allegedly tried to commit suicide,” added Ernst.

She said there were no visible injuries on the child’s body and that police are waiting for postmortem results to establish the cause of death. The suspect is expected to appear in Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on June 12.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested after allegedly drowning his daughter in a bucket filled with water in Pienaar, near Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, in April.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the 18-year-old mother of the baby was visiting Lindokuhle Maloka. At about 10.30pm she went out of the house for a moment.

“Maloka allegedly took the baby to another bedroom, where there was a bucket with water. He then drowned the baby. After the ordeal, he left the lifeless body of the baby inside the bucket and went away after he gave his mother R200,” added Mohlala.

“When the mother of the baby returned, she went to the room where she left Maloka and the baby but found nobody. She then called him and enquired about his whereabouts and the baby. Maloka told her that she will find the baby in a bucket. The mother of the baby made the gruesome discovery together with Maloka’s mother,” said Mohlala.
