Man arrested near Mbombela with R6m in suspected stolen power transformers

Police intercepted a hijacked truck on Schoemanskloof Road, uncovering millions of rands worth of infrastructure equipment.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday (August 18) for possession of suspected stolen property worth over R6m, reports Mpumalanga News.

The Ehlanzeni Anti-Hijacking Task Team and Ngodwana SAPS members made the arrest at about 13:00 on Schoemanskloof Road, heading towards Mbombela.

According to police, the task team received intelligence about a hijacked truck transporting stolen power transformers.

Police operationalised the information and tactically intercepted the truck.

A preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle had allegedly been stolen in Devon, Gauteng.

A subsequent search uncovered the suspected stolen power transformers.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property.

Police are working with the Department of Home Affairs to verify the suspect’s immigration status.
He is expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court soon.
