Man burnt to death in Joburg township
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a man was found burnt to death in the Zandspruit township in Honeydew, Johannesburg.
The man, believed to have been part of a gang that has been terrorising residents in the area, was found with his feet tied with steel wire, while his shack was also dismantled before being burnt down on Tuesday, Randburg Sun reported.
His death is believed to be a result of mob justice. However, Honeydew police spokesperson Karen Jacobs told The Citizen police could not confirm that allegation, as the investigation into the incident was still in its early phases.
“The detectives are [also] investigating the possibility of the suspect being involved in criminal activity, but cannot confirm this at this stage,” Jacobs added.
Certain residents were relieved following the man’s death, saying they would have to deal with one less criminal in their community.
“These guys really terrorised us. They broke into our homes and stole our belongings,” one of the residents was reported as saying.
Another resident said: “They didn’t mind breaking into your home while you were in. They would rape women in front of their husbands. They were really bad.”
A case of murder has been opened by Honeydew police, who are appealing to anyone with information to make contact with the investigating officer, Constable Lawrence Muthelo on
076 649 5169. No arrests have been made.
Earlier this month, an unidentified man was found with his hands bound inside the boot of a burnt car in Florida Park, Roodepoort on Gauteng’s West rand.
Police said they could not confirm the man was the same one a company car had been issued to, as the body was burnt beyond recognition.
