Man critical following rhino attack in Pietermaritzburg

An advanced life support ambulance was dispatched to a private rhino conservancy after a man was attacked by a rhino.

A man sustained serious injuries and is in critical condition after being attacked by a rhino just outside Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

An article published by The Witness states that Midlands EMS’ advanced life support ambulance was dispatched to a rhino conservancy to provide urgent medical assistance following a rhino attack.

“On arrival, our team found one person, a male, who had sustained serious injuries and was in critical condition. Immediate advanced life support treatment was initiated to stabilise the patient.

“This included the use of specialised rescue equipment to ensure safe and effective care in a challenging environment,” says Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson.

Robertson explains that after the patient was stabilised on-site, he was carefully transported to a Level 1 trauma hospital.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a child was left with serious injuries after a horse-riding accident in Howick.

Robertson says the Midlands EMS K9 unit and the Midlands EMS Howick ambulance team and advanced life support paramedics were dispatched and, upon arrival, it was determined that a child had sustained serious injuries and required urgent advanced life support treatment.

The child was stabilised on scene using specialised rescue equipment before being transported to a nearby hospital.
