Man in Lowveld court for child pornography charges

A 66-year-old man was arrested by the White River SAPS last week on charges related to the possession and distribution of child pornography.

The man was arrested on Tuesday May 4 after the police had been made aware of the pornographic videos and photos by a concerned citizen, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of their own safety.

The Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi, confirmed that a suspect had been arrested and appeared in court last week on Tuesday.

The SAPS cybercrime unit found dozens of “disgusting”, as Hlathi phrased it, videos and photos on the man’s phone. After his arrest, his laptop and other phones were also seized.

He appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court, where he requested legal representation and was remanded in custody.

His bail hearing took place yesterday. At the time of going to press, he had not yet appeared in front of a magistrate.

The police investigating the case said they would strongly oppose his bail application.
