Man murdered in Mpumalanga: 3 law enforcement officials arrested
An intensive investigation into a man’s murder has resulted in the arrest of two police officers and a reservist.
The three police officials implicated in the death of Mkhapheni Mbata on October 2 were arrested yesterday.
Ridge Times reports that the officials will appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of murder.
The two police officers and a reservist are attached to the eMbalenhle Crime Prevention unit.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested them after an intensive investigation into Mbatha’s death.
He was allegedly assaulted at his home, and his body was taken to a nearby clinic.
Mbatha’s death sparked a public outcry, with residents marching to the police station more than once.
They demanded that IPID look into the murder.
Following the officials’ arrests yesterday, the acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, called on members to work within the framework of the law.
He emphasised that no one is above the law, and if anyone is found to have committed a crime, the law will take its course without any favours.
