Man sentenced for stabbing man to death and throwing him out of vehicle in Amersfoort

Andile Maxwell Thanjekwayo (28) from Amersfoort was sentenced to 26 years’ imprisonment by the Mpumalanga High Court in Breyten for killing Mr Mafika Samson Nkosi and for defeating the ends of justice.

According to information received, Thanjekwayo pleaded guilty to the crimes and was convicted of murder and defeating the ends of justice, Ridge Times reports.

Ms Monica Nyuswa, the regional spokesman of Directors of Public Prosecution Mpumalanga, said: “In his plea statement, he told the court that on 5 October 2019, he and Mr Nkosi, who was his neighbour at the time, went to the tavern to consume alcohol using Mr Nkosi’s vehicle.

“Later they left the tavern.

“Along the way, they had a misunderstanding and he took out a knife and stabbed Mr Nkosi several times.

“The deceased succumbed to the injuries.”

Thanjekwayo added, he threw Mr Nkosi’s body out of the vehicle and left the vehicle.

Thereafter, Thanjekwayo went to the police station.

He made a false report that he was in the company of the deceased when they were hijacked.

Ms Nyuswa said: “Thanjekwayo was arrested a week later and made admissions in the matter and pointed out the crime scene to the police.”

A victim impact statement which the state handed in, indicated that the deceased was a breadwinner and had four children he looked after.

Mr Ashwin Poodhun, prosecutor senior state advocate, further submitted that Thanjekwayo’s plea of guilty was not a substantial and compelling factor but a neutral factor.

Thanjekwayo misdirected the police’s investigation when he claimed that he and the deceased were the victims of a robbery.

Mr Hein Brauckmann, judge, agreed with the state that a lengthy sentence should be imposed.
