Man shot dead in Amanzimtoti hijacking

Bystanders were left traumatised after witnessing the brazen shooting.

A man was shot dead in the Amanzimtoti CBD on Friday morning just before 09:00 on Commercial Road outside the local post office.

According to an eyewitness, the victim, who is believed to be in his late 60s, parked his Toyota Land Cruiser near the post office and went out.

“As he walked back, three armed men approached him and shot him once and he fell. They then went through his pockets and took out his car keys. The men then got into his car and drove off and joined the N2 south,” said the eyewitness.

A fourth suspect who was driving a Mercedes Benz sedan drove off in another direction around the post office.

The witness further said one of the men was carrying a large device with an antenna.

A nearby business owner who saw the incident, said that the victim was a retiree who used to own a car rental business.

The crime scene was until recently still active and the police were attending to the incident.
