Man smashes Gautrain carriages in Pretoria

A man has been arrested after smashing several windows of two Gautrain carriages and almost injuring a passenger and his pregnant wife.

Gautrain spokesperson Errol Braithwaite said the unidentified man apparently boarded the 8.30pm train on Saturday when he pulled out a blunt instrument he used to smash the windows, Centurion Rekord reported.

It was alleged the man and his pregnant wife were inside one of the carriages when the man started to smash the windows of the carriages.

Braithwaite said Gautrain security was alerted by the driver and were waiting on the platform at Pretoria station along with police.

“The man was arrested at the station and a case of malicious damage to property has been opened,” added Braithwaite.

Braithwaite said no one was injured, and Gautrain was in contact with another passenger who witnessed part of the incident and may have been able to assist with the investigation.

In a separate incident, a man was seriously injured when he attempted to jump on to a moving Gautrain carriage in Sunnyside, Pretoria, last year.

It was alleged the man was chased by the police when he tried to get into the moving Gautrain.

The man ran and jumped over the fence between the house and the railway tracks. He fell several metres before jumping on to a moving Gautrain, where he fell again, police said.

He was arrested for trespassing. At the moment, he is in hospital under police guard, added police.
