Mangaung ward official sentenced for selling municipal land
A Bloemfontein court sentenced a Grassland Phase 4 ward committee member who was found guilty of corruption for selling municipal land.
A ward committee member from Grassland Phase 4, Khayelitsha, was recently found guilty of corruption by the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.
Bloemfontein Courant reports the perpetrator was arrested in February following a complaint sent to the Mangaung Metro Municipality’s (MMM) law enforcement department in January. The complaint accused the individual of selling municipality-owned land to community members for R6 000. The matter was subsequently reported to the Hawks for further investigation, which led to his arrest.
The court sentenced the individual to a fine of R10 000 or 10 years’ imprisonment.
The office of Mayor Gregory Nthatisi took to social media to commend the police on their thorough investigation and appealed to residents who have fallen victim to come forward.
“The work to catch more people selling municipal land continues, and we further appeal to those who have fallen victim to such scams, bought illegal land, or are aware of such criminal activities happening in Mangaung to report this matter to the MMM’s human settlement and planning department and the police to stop this illegal practice.”
