Manhunt launched after handcuffed suspect escapes Tzaneen SAPS

Awaiting-trial prisoner Leonard Letswalo escaped from Tzaneen Police Station premises while being charged, prompting a manhunt after searches failed.

Police have launched a manhunt for an awaiting-trial prisoner who escaped from lawful custody at the Tzaneen SAPS in Limpopo on Friday around 11:00.

Letaba Herald reports the suspect, Leonard Letswalo (20), was arrested on Thursday in connection with the unlawful possession of ammunition. He escaped while being charged within the police station premises.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says Letswalo fled on foot. Immediate searches around the Tzaneen CBD, the Ritavi River and Lephephane Village were unsuccessful.

“At the time of his escape, he was reportedly still handcuffed with the cuffs locked to the front,” adds Ledwaba.

Manhunt details

Letswalo is described as a short, slender male, approximately 1.58m tall, light in complexion, with a beard and a brush-cut hairstyle. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, a blue hoodie and was barefoot.

The public is advised not to approach the suspect but to immediately report any information regarding his whereabouts to the nearest police station.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Themba Ngobeni, on 079 298 9609, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or provide information anonymously via the MySAPS app.

Police investigations are continuing.
