Maphumulo Maskandi artist Zithulele “Majotha” Zungu dies unexpectedly

The Maskandi industry has lost another promising artist from Maphumulo in Zithulele “Majotha” Zungu, who died last Friday.

His manager Mzwandile Zungu said Majotha died at a Durban hospital after a short illness.

The 39-year-old artist was well known for his hit song Thula ungasho which was on his 2015 album Professional.

Messages of condolence have been pouring out on social media as fans and artists express their shock and condolences to his family and friends.

He released his first album in 2012 titled Inkinga Yamabutho and his last album was Umhlaba Uhlangene which was released last year.

He won 4 music awards: 2016 best male artist SAVA awards, 2017 and 2018 best male solo artist at the Amantshontsho kaMaskandi Awards and 2017 best male artist at the SATMA awards.

He was also nominated at the 2017 Crown Gospel Music Awards for the Maskandi gospel category.

“He had an incredible talent as evidenced by the number of artists who worked with him on different songs,” said Zungu.

Among the artists who worked with Majotha was Maskandi legend Thokozani Langa, who featured on Majotha’s song Singomakonya on his second album.

Maphumulo mayor, Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini said she was shattered by the death of Majotha, who among other Maskandi artists had put Maphumulo on the map.

“On behalf Maphumulo local municipality, I would like to share in a grief of Majotha’s family, his colleagues, as well as all his supporters.

“We have undoubtedly lost one of the best Maskandi artists in the country who aimed to revive traditional music and took it to the international community,” said Khuzwayo-Dlamini.
