Case against Mark Lifman murder accused postponed
The two men’s recent bail application based on new evidence failed when the court ruled it was existing facts rearranged to appear like new evidence.
The case against the two men accused of murdering controversial Cape businessman Mark Lifman was postponed to March 27 during a brief appearance in the Thembalethu Regional Court yesterday.
The accused, Johannes ‘Jakes’ Jacobs and Gert ‘Johnny’ Bezuidenhout, are expected to appear in Mossel Bay Regional Court 5 on the 27th, when a possible trial date may be set, reports George Herald.
It is unclear why the matter will be heard in Mossel Bay.
Bail previously refused
The latest postponement follows an earlier ruling in which Magistrate Mashau Ramalebane refused bail for the accused.
Delivering his judgment in the Thembalethu Regional Court on February 12, Ramalebane said the defence had failed to present any genuinely new evidence to justify reconsidering bail.
According to the magistrate, the information presented by the defence was not new, but rather a rearrangement of existing facts intended to create the impression that new evidence had emerged.
Suspects arrested hours after murder
Lifman was shot dead on November 3, 2024 in the parking area of the Garden Route Mall, being struck by five bullets. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Jacobs and Bezuidenhout were arrested hours later near Uniondale and face charges of premeditated murder.
