MEC calls for community action after rape and murder of Free State matriculant

Police have arrested a man for the rape and murder of a Free State matriculant.

The Free State Department of Social Development has extended its condolences to the family of Relebohile Makhore, who was allegedly raped and murdered on Sunday, reports the Bloemfontein Courant.

Relebohile was part of the Class of 2025 and had recently celebrated the completion of her matric.

The department described her death as a tragic loss that highlights the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence (GBV) in the province.

Social Development MEC Mathabo Hlalele expressed concern over the continued killing of women and children, noting that in many cases the perpetrators are known to the victims.

“It is painful that women and children continue to lose their lives, often at the hands of people close to them,” Hlalele said.

The MEC encouraged communities to establish and strengthen non-profit organisations within wards to actively fight against GBV and the killing of women and children.

“Women continue to march, pray and do everything possible to put an end to gender-based violence, yet it persists. It is truly heartbreaking,” she added.

Hlalele also revealed that Mangaung remains among the areas with the highest statistics for the killing of women and children.

The alleged suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody.
