Metro cop fires shot during altercation with taxi driver (video)

Investigations are under way after video footage emerged showing an Ekurhuleni metro police officer firing a shot in an altercation with a taxi driver in Birchleigh North, Kempton Park.

The video, published on Facebook on Saturday, shows the taxi driver infuriated after the officer apparently confiscated his taxi’s licence disc, Kempton Express reported.

In the video, the taxi driver is seen demanding his licence disc back, but the officer refused.

The situation escalated into a scuffle when the taxi driver angrily confronted the officer, and the officer fired a shot into the air.

After the shot was fired, the taxi driver got more aggressive, shouting: “Shoot me, shoot me.”

As the metro police officer walks away, the driver keeps following him.

A man believed to be the owner of the taxi is seen arriving later and pulls the driver away from the officer.

Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago told The Citizen that the case would be investigated by the metro police’s integrity and standards committee today.

In a separate incident, a Johannesburg metro police officer was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man and wounding another in Dobsonville, Soweto, last week.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 45-year-old officer, who was off duty and driving his private car, claimed the men had attempted to hijack him shortly before 5am.

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed in the scuffle.
