‘Metro police officer’ arrested for hijacking, theft in Mpumalanga
Law enforcement officers are following leads and expect to make more arrests in connection with a hijacking that took place on Wednesday.
A suspected Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) officer was arrested in Mpumalanga in connection with a hijacking and theft in Sundra, Delmas.
According to an article published by Pretoria Rekord, Mpumalanga police said the officer was arrested on Wednesday and a search for his accomplices is ongoing.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Jabu Ndubane says the officer and his gang allegedly hijacked a security personnel escort for a courier truck.
Ndubane says the complainant reported that as he drove one of the escort vehicles, another vehicle pulled up to the convoy, flashed blue lights and had a siren blaring.
“When the victim pulled over, he was forced to lie down by the gang. They searched him and took his firearm.”
She says the suspects drove off with the security escort but dropped him off in Delmas.
“The victim saw the police and reported the matter. They swiftly searched for the suspects and within a few minutes the TMPD officer was arrested.”
Ndubane says when police found the suspect, he was stuck in mud.
He was taken to Sundra Police Station for processing and it was discovered that he works for the TMPD in Pretoria.
Ndubane says the suspect’s accomplices fled the scene.
“More arrests are expected as the police are following leads to the remaining suspects,” she adds.
Pretoria Rekord reached out to the TMPD, however, spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba had not commented at the time of publishing.
Tshwane MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee says the case has been handed over to the police commissioner.
“Our investigators already went to the SAPS station to investigate and the necessary steps will be taken.”
Coetzee says the TMPD is awaiting feedback.
He adds that the metro will comment on the matter fully when more information is made available to city officials.
