Meyerton man sentenced to 12 years behind bars for murdering girlfriend

A man from Meyerton recently received a prison sentence after stabbing his girlfriend to death in December 2021.

A man (30) who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in 2021 was handed down a prison sentence of 12 years in the Vereeniging Regional Court recently.

Sello William Mokoena (30) brutally stabbed his girlfriend Mpenyana Joyce Weight on December 22, 2021.

According to police spokesperson Constable Tlaleng Moloi, the police in Meyerton received information about a murder at Kraal Janteen in Sicelo.

“On arrival at the murder scene, the police found the lifeless body of a female with stab wounds,” said Moloi.

A murder case was opened and assigned to investigating officer Detective Sergeant Innocentia Mofokeng, who through diligent investigation and collection of evidence managed to secure a successful conviction.

The decision to sentence Mokoena to 12 years in prison was reached after evidence was presented in court about the brutality of the stabbing.

Meyerton Police Station’s acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Johan de Winnaar expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the investigating officer for her excellent work.

“I trust that this sentence will bring hope to the victims of gender-based violence. Severe punishments exists for such offenders,” De Winnaar said.
