Middelburg RDP ‘fraudster’ sought by Hawks

Sfiso Johannes Khumalo, is sought for a second time after he was released on bail and allegedly failed to show for court dates relating to RDP fraud.

A man who allegedly colluded with a Steve Tshwete Municipality employee to commit fraudulent RDP transactions in Rockdale, Middelburg, is wanted by the Hawks for evading his court appearance.

A press release by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Mpumalanga says that Khumalo, who was previously sought, was rearrested on March 1, 2021. He was released on R10 000 bail on March 30 of the same year. He allegedly appeared before court several times before later evading a court hearing.

It is alleged that in October 2018, Sylvia Nyandeni (43) an employee of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, colluded with Khumalo to defraud applicants of RDP houses in Middelburg.

Nyandeni misrepresented herself as having the authority to receive money from the applicants. The defrauded victims were allegedly given a bank account of Khumalo to deposit the funds which amounted to just over R700 000.

The pair reportedly shared the proceeds afterwards.

Nyandeni and Khumalo were summoned to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on July 24, 2020, however only Nyandeni managed to honour the court appearance whilst Khumalo sent a sick note stating that he was not feeling well.

The court ordered that Khumalo to appear alongside Nyandeni on the follow-up date, which was scheduled for August 20, 2020, but he once again absconded.

A new warrant of arrest was then issued.

Nyandeni (43) appeared in court on March 23. The case was postponed to May 4.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Zodwa Mokoena is requesting the assistance of the public in locating the accused.

Anyone with the information on the accused can contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Amos Mahlangu on 071 481 3069 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively send a tip off via MySAPSApp. All information received will be treated with the strictest of confidentiality.
