Midvaal traffic officer hailed a hero after saving baby

Spotting a baby in an overturned vehicle that was in a ditch filled with water immediately brought out a traffic officer’s mothering instinct.

Midvaal Local Municipality traffic officer Moleboheng Pule (46) has been dubbed an angel of hope after she took care of a six-week-old baby who was involved in a car accident while en route to a clinic appointment with her parents.

On January 9, Pule and her colleagues responded to a single-vehicle accident along the R59 near the Blockhouse.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Pule says as soon as she saw the baby, her motherly instincts kicked in and all she wanted to do was ensure that the baby was safe, well and unharmed.

“The car had rolled over and landed in a ditch filled with water. On further inspection, I saw a baby in her car seat and something inside me changed. I immediately became a mother at that point. The baby became my priority.”

The news of Pule’s gesture has gone viral, garnering her recognition from community members who hailed her for her actions.

Speaking about the overwhelming response received from the masses, Pule says it warms her heart.

“I am glad that people realise that we are not only traffic officers, but we are human and our job is to save lives.”

Pule says she is happy to be pursuing a career that she is passionate about as she loves working with people.

“I am truly humbled by the response that I have received and I will continue to do my best to ensure the safety of our people on the roads.”

Midvaal’s chief traffic officer Anna Mpai says she is proud of Pule.

“We are happy and humbled to see how people perceive us. It is not always about being punitive to motorists, ours is to ensure that we save lives as much as we ensure that the law is upheld. We appreciate the observation and positive feedback.”
