Military man appears in Durban court for wife’s murder

A man handed himself over to police after his wife was found dead, with multiple gunshot wounds to her head and neck.

Military-trained officer Lwanda Mxolisi Zungu, who appeared in court for the alleged murder of his wife, has been described as ‘a protector’ by his family.

Zungu appeared briefly at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court in Durban yesterday, facing a charge of murder.

The state opposed bail and he was remanded in custody until January 17 for further investigation and the verification of his address for bail.

His wife Tania Msane Zungu (36) was found with multiple gunshot wounds in her neck and head in their home in Pinetown on January 3. Zungu handed himself over to law enforcement on the weekend after the murder.

It is alleged he left the scene of the shooting before paramedics and the police arrived.

According to preliminary reports by ALS paramedics, they were called out to Tyrone Road in Padfield Park, Pinetown, at about 10:15 last Wednesday, after receiving reports of a shooting that occurred at a residence.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find SAPS and security companies in attendance. A female was found to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

“Paramedics assessed the patient and unfortunately found that there was nothing they could do for [her], and she was declared deceased on the scene,” says ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

Zungu, during his court appearance, appeared confident and calm, while his family was present to support him. No members from his wife’s side of the family were present.

Speaking to The Witness outside court, his sister Lwandle Zungu said that this period has been hard for the family.

“It hasn’t been easy as we all know that violence against women is not right. It is difficult also for the children as they have been left with no parents.

“We know him to be a protector and as someone who loved his family. Anyone who may have seen them before the incident can attest that they were very happy,” she said.

Lwandle added that the couple’s children, aged 13 and 15, are in a safe place with their mother’s relatives. Tania was laid to rest on Sunday.
