Mixed fuel outlook for April, consumers still feeling the pressure – AA

While Easter holiday-makers will still have to dig a little deeper for petrol, diesel prices are expected to decrease marginally.

South Africans can expect a slight increase in petrol prices in April, based on unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund (Cef).

According to the Automobile Association (AA), the data also points to a marginal decrease in diesel prices and illuminating paraffin.

The AA says that while the year did not get off to a good start for all grades of fuel, any form of relief for consumers is welcome, especially as we head into the Easter holidays.

According to the latest data from Cef, petrol 95 is expected to climb by around 10 cents per litre and 93 petrol by around nine cents per litre.

The wholesale price of diesel is expected to decrease by between 34 and 38 cents per litre, while the cost of illuminating paraffin is set to come down by around 47 cents per litre.

The AA says the decrease in diesel and paraffin prices is good news.

“Diesel is a big input cost in major sectors, such as agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and retailing, and an increase here often contributes to increased prices of basic commodities.

“If the rand/US dollar exchange rate and the movement in international product prices continue in their current downward trajectory, there is a likelihood that by the time the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy makes the official adjustment for next month, the under-recovery will be significantly less and result in a much-needed price decrease,” a statement from the AA read.

South African motorists are advised to budget efficiently for their Easter trips and ensure their vehicles are in good condition.

The AA is offering consumers free holiday vehicle checks until April 2. Motorists can contact any of the participating dealers to book an appointment.
