Montecasino bomb threat’s origin under investigation

Montecasino confirms a bomb threat yesterday was unfounded after SAPS cleared the area following strict safety protocols.

Despite a viral social media post last night, Montecasino management confirmed that no bomb was found at the entertainment hub in Fourways, Johannesburg, following a threat earlier the day.

Fourways Review reports the post, which began circulating just after 18:00, claimed the casino was being evacuated and that law enforcement officials were on the scene.

The Douglasdale CPF was aware of the claims but could not comment, while Douglasdale police said they would investigate but declined to provide further details.

According to Erin Davidson, who was at Montecasino at the time, police were seen near the movies, and the movie area was evacuated. A police helicopter was also spotted in the vicinity. However, by 20:00, everything appeared to be clear and back to normal.

Social media posts suggested police were investigating an abandoned parcel.

Montecasino management confirmed that a bomb threat was received earlier in the day, and strict safety protocols were followed to ensure the safety of patrons.

“Earlier [yesterday] Montecasino received a bomb threat. Following strict safety protocols, guests in the area were taken to safety, and the South African Police Service bomb disposal unit conducted a thorough sweep of the precinct. The threat was unfounded, and SAPS has issued a clearance certificate. The area has now been cleared and safely reopened. The origin of the threat is now being investigated by SAPS,” Montecasino said in a statement.
