Mother, daughter attacked on KZN beach

Investigations are under way after a mother and her daughter were assaulted, with the daughter getting stabbed, while walking on the beach at Ballito’s Salmon Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

Ballito’s Salmon Bay in KwaZulu-Natal were on their way back from the Galley Beach Bar & Grill to where they were parked on Tuesday when a man ran towards them, demanding their cellphones and wallets, North Coast Courier reported.

The unidentified man allegedly hit the victims with a rock, cutting and bruising them.

Bela and Gabriela fought back, and Bela pushed the suspect away. The man pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed Gabriela in the left hand after trying to stab her mother.

“I think he panicked when he saw the blood because he bolted back up the pedestrian steps,” said Bela.

Ron Warwick witnessed the attack and rushed Gabriela to hospital on his motorbike. The doctor confirmed Gabriela had severed some tendons in her hand. She was operated on yesterday afternoon at about 4pm.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene empty handed.

Umhlali police Lieutenant-Colonel Dieter Fittkau said investigation are ongoing and police are looking for the suspect.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested after a woman was robbed of her cellphone in central Johannesburg, Gauteng last Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the 53-year-old woman was robbed on the corner of Commissioner and Von Weilligh streets.

“She felt someone putting his hand into her handbag and take her cellphone. She screamed for help and the security came to her rescue and chased a suspect,” added Mbele.

The police joined the security guards, and a 26-year-old man was arrested. He was charged with common robbery.
