Mother, sons lucky to be alive after run-in with 6 armed robbers

A woman and her sons were returning home from a family function when they were attacked by a group of men armed with knives.

A traumatised mother is thankful to be alive and unharmed after she and her two sons were robbed when their vehicle broke down on the Copesville (Bambatha Road) highway in KZN on Saturday night.

Lynette Kaisry (49) says she and her sons, aged 20 and 17, were returning home from a family function when her vehicle encountered mechanical problems.

While they were waiting for assistance, six men armed with knives appeared, demanding cellphones and Kaisry’s handbag. Kaisry says she is alive because her sons fought off the knife-wielding robbers.

“We were travelling on the Copesville highway, just opposite the quarry, at around 21:30 when the car jerked and switched off.

“My eldest son, who was driving, got out to check what had happened and was trying to caution the traffic behind us as the cars were driving fast and he was scared we were going to get hit by the traffic,” says Kaisry.

“We had been waiting for about 20 minutes for assistance when six men approached us.

“They pretended to ask if we needed help as they asked my son if we had a flat tyre. My son said we were just waiting for some people. Three of the men suddenly went to my son and held him at knife-point. They asked him if he wanted to die for his phone,” she adds.
