Motorists allegedly robbed on Gauteng highway: JMPD and SAPS mobilise resources

Various law enforcement units swiftly came together following reports of motorists being robbed on a major highway.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and SAPS took immediate action following reports of motorists, who were stuck in traffic, being robbed at the Crown Interchange on the M1 North this morning.

According to an article published by Alberton Record, it is reported that a video and voice note emerged on various social media platforms this morning, depicting motorists allegedly being robbed on the highway.

According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, the JMPD Tactical Response Unit was deployed to the area to search for the suspects.

“Despite extensive efforts, no suspects have been apprehended thus far. However, we reassure the public that efforts to locate and apprehend the individuals responsible will continue unabated.

“We urge any victims or witnesses of the alleged incident to come forward and report the matter immediately. Reporting such incidents is crucial for the proper investigation and prosecution of criminal activity, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

“The safety and security of all residents and commuters in Johannesburg remain a top priority for the JMPD,” says Fihla, who encourages members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or activities to the authorities promptly.

SAPS mobilises resources

As a result of the incident, SAPS national commissioner General Fannie Masemola has ordered the maximum mobilisation of resources along Gauteng highways and other strategic locations during peak hour traffic.

The SAPS has also bolstered the deployment of the Highway Patrol, SAPS Airwing, and Gauteng Flying Squad units to monitor and conduct regular patrols along the identified routes.

In a statement issued to the media, national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said no cases have been reported yet.

The SAPS encourages anyone who has fallen victim to this alleged crime to call the Johannesburg Central Police Station commander on 082 332 5016, for better co-ordination and prompt dispatching of resources.

“Engagements with the JMPD and other law enforcement agencies are ongoing to curb further incidents,” said Mathe.

According to an article published by Rosebank Killarney Gazette, Vision Tactical’s director Yaseen Theba said: “They [the suspected robbers] reportedly used the bridges as a means to avoid capture.”

“Our team, in collaboration with JMPD TRU members, thoroughly combed the area in search of the suspects,” he added.

Theba said there has been a noticeable increase in incidents on highways recently, which may be attributed to hotter temperatures.

These conditions can lead drivers to let down their guard and open their windows, under the assumption that they are safe on the highway.

“This makes them more vulnerable to criminal activities. We strongly recommend that the public stay alert and cautious while in traffic,” he said.
