Mpumalanga CIT heist: Armed gang, community members flee with cash

The security guards were ordered out of the vehicle before it was bombed to get to the cash.

A cash van was bombed in a cash-in-transit heist in Marite, Mpumalanga yesterday. After robbers made off with their loot, community members swooped in for the leftovers.

Calcutta Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Millicent Khoza says the suspects shot at the CIT vehicle until it came to a halt and instructed the security guards to get out of the van before they blew it open.

“They took money and fled the scene in different cars. Some of the security guards were reported to have sustained injuries during the robbery and were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention,” says Khoza.

According to her, community members looted some of the leftover cash from the crime scene, and in the process, a vehicle was torched.

The R40 between Hazyview and Bushbuckridge was closed for police to conclude their examination of the scene.

Khoza says more information about the incident will be shared once they are done with their investigation.
