Mpumalanga policeman one of 6 arrested for hijacking

Goods worth R1.3m and a vehicle, reported as hijacked in Gauteng in 2017, were found on the scene.

Police had to arrest one of their own when Middelburg Flying Squad members tracked two truck trailers hijacked in Elsburg, Gauteng to a location in Clewer, eMalahleni on Monday.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala says police received information about the truck trailers and managed to trace them at a plot in Clewer. When they got there, they also found a white Toyota Dakar double cab bakkie and six people on the scene.

Police managed to arrest all six. They discovered that one of the suspects is a 43-year-old SAPS sergeant stationed at Vosman while to other suspects were Zimbabwean nationals.

The trailers were loaded with cooking oil with an estimated value of R1.3m. The truck was found abandoned a few kilometres from the plot.

Mohlala says the Toyota was hijacked in Garsfontein, Gauteng in September 2017.

The suspects appeared in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Investigations to see if they are linked with other cases and to establish whether the foreign nationals have legal documents to be in South Africa, are underway.
