N1 reopens between Worcester and Paarl with major delays expected
Traffic has resumed on the N1 through the Cape Winelands, but stop-and-go operations and diversions are expected to cause lengthy delays.
The N1 has reopened in both directions between Worcester and Paarl, although only one direction of traffic will be accommodated at a time as authorities continue efforts to restore full access through the Cape Winelands.
According to George Herald, the South African National Roads Agency has worked continuously, day and night, to reopen the critical route.
Traffic management measures, including a stop-and-go system, are currently in operation at the Rawsonville weighbridge, while additional deviations may be implemented along certain sections of the route.
Delays expected
Motorists travelling between Worcester and Paarl, and vice versa, are advised to prepare for significant delays. Waiting periods of at least 90 minutes can be expected during directional traffic flow operations.
Traffic intending to continue towards Cape Town from Worcester is, for the time being, being diverted via the N2.
Authorities have cautioned that changing traffic flow from one direction to another will take time, and road users are urged to remain patient. Directional changes will be communicated as operations progress.
Restrictions remain in place
No hazardous material vehicles will be permitted through the Huguenot Tunnel.
However, hazardous goods vehicles will be allowed to utilise the Du Toitskloof Pass, but only in the same direction as the active N1 traffic flow at the relevant time.
Emergency and road management teams from multiple authorities remain on site and are working around the clock to clear affected areas and reopen roads as soon as conditions are deemed safe.
Authorities thanked residents and motorists across the Western Cape for their patience and co-operation during the ongoing operations.
