N12 chaos: Cars veer into Benoni dam reeds to avoid reversing driver

Two drivers escaped serious injury after a lost load of toilet paper caused mayhem on an Ekurhuleni highway.

Two motorists travelling on the N12 west were rescued from Middle Dam in Benoni just after 10:00 today (May 14) after their cars plunged into the reeds, reports Benoni City Times.

According to Frederick Koen, of NoJack Vehicle Tracking, who was on the scene, the female driver of a Mazda CX and the male driver of a Mercedes-Benz ML landed in the thick reeds at the dam after attempting to avoid a collision on the highway.

“Eyewitnesses stated that the driver of a light delivery vehicle suddenly started reversing into oncoming traffic, after noticing that he had lost a load of toilet paper,” he said.

“In an attempt to avoid the vehicle, drivers swerved, with two unfortunate drivers ending up in the dam. The driver of the truck apparently fled the scene,” explained Keon.

He confirmed that neither driver sustained serious injuries and paramedics were on scene to assess them.

Recovery teams were towing the vehicles onto dry land.

“Thankfully, both vehicles landed in the thick reeds and didn’t therefore submerge into the water,” he added.
