Jersey debate: Nearly all-white Boks tackle Ireland

Boks supporters hoping to see the world cup reigning champions in green and gold on Saturday are going to be disappointed.

SA Rugby has confirmed the Springboks will wear an alternate kit in the crucial world cup match against Ireland on Saturday.

A clash of kits is anticipated when dark-green South Africa takes on emerald-green Ireland in the Pool B encounter in Paris, and to avoid this, the Boks will be clad in white jerseys for the clash.

A statement from SA Rugby said South Africa’s first alternate is hyper-jade and white; the second alternate is white with a hyper-jade collar.

It also stated that the second alternate (all white) will be worn against Ireland as the hyper-jade is too much like Ireland’s green jersey.

South Africa’s jade-coloured alternate kit, worn in their world cup opener against Scotland, has been met with a mixed reception.

“The Springboks are not permitted to wear the green and gold jersey in every Test match – as much as we would like to,” a SA Rugby spokesperson said.

“The alternative jersey colour is white, but Nike proposed enhancing the plain look with a modern design, drawing on various influences in a new combination to appeal to a new and wider audience. It was presented to senior Springboks, who gave it their seal of approval.”
