Newcastle child dies after alleged skip bin accident at flats
A five-year-old child died after a municipal skip bin allegedly toppled over during a game of hide-and-seek in Suryaville.
The Newcastle Advertiser has learned of the tragic death of a five-year-old child in Suryaville on Friday (May 15).
According to the newspaper, it is believed the child was playing hide-and-seek with friends when a municipal skip bin allegedly toppled over, trapping the child underneath.
According to a source not authorised to speak to the media, the incident occurred at a block of flats in Suryaville.
Emergency services responded to the scene, where the child was declared dead after suffering extensive injuries.
Municipality responds
Newcastle Municipality spokesperson Musa Ngobo responded to the Advertiser, saying:
“I must sincerely express my heartfelt sympathy and solidarity with the family, loved ones and the broader Lennoxton community during this painful and devastating time. The loss of a young child under such circumstances is truly heartbreaking.
“Please be assured that the matter will be urgently brought to the attention of the relevant municipal authorities for investigation and verification of all facts surrounding the incident.
“Once the municipality has received the necessary information and clarity on the matter, a formal municipal statement will be issued accordingly.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the bereaved family during this incredibly difficult period.”
Calls for accountability
Matthew Shunmugam of the Newcastle District Residents Forum (NDRF) said they extend their deepest condolences to the family of the child who tragically lost her life at the Suryaville Municipal Flats following the alleged toppling of a municipal skip bin.
“This devastating incident reinforces long-standing concerns raised by residents and the NDRF regarding unsafe municipal infrastructure and the continued failure to ensure proper maintenance and basic safety measures,” he said.
He continued: “The Newcastle Municipality and council cannot continue to overlook obvious risks in our communities until lives are lost. A child’s death under such circumstances demands urgent answers and full accountability.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family during this extremely difficult time.”
The Newcastle Advertiser has reached out to police for official comment, but none was received at the time of publication.
