No arrests in KZN Matric pupils stabbing cases
No arrests have been made to date after three Matric pupils were stabbed to death on a Richards Bay beach in KwaZulu-Natal.
Philani Gumede from Ntongande High School, Thobani Mkhize from Hluma High School and Bongumusa Mathenjwa from Langalibomvu High School had been murdered at about 3am while attending an after party at the Bay Hall on Alkantstrand, Zululand Observer reported.
It was reported that the pupils attending the function became involved in a brawl that got out of control.
The victims sustained fatal stab wounds to their bodies. Three counts of murder are being investigated by Richards Bay police.
Ntongande High School principal T Mnqayi said this was a terrible time for the family.
“… This is tragic because he was a very good and down-to-earth pupil with a bright future,’ said Mnqayi while talking about Gumede.
Mnqayi discouraged pupils from attending such parties without adult or police supervision.
“We are not only teachers, but also parents. We do not approve of such events. We want pupils who leave school to start a career and positively impact the community. Now, we are losing youngsters every holiday through such events,” Mnqayi said.
Mkhize’s family continues to grieve for their loss.
“His granny said Thobani spoke about a party and they advised him not to attend,” Hluma High School principal EB Zulu said.
“All staff members visited the family to comfort them. We are very upset. Thobani was a brilliant child who was going to pass for sure. It is always better when pupils are supervised by teachers. The SAPS should have been informed. This function was organised privately and not by the school,” Zulu said.
The third pupil, Mathenjwa, had been described as being a kind and well-loved person by his peers.
Police investigations are ongoing.
