No clarity yet on child’s death at Boksburg Civic Centre

New information has come to light regarding the death of a 16-year-old schoolgirl who allegedly jumped from the rooftop of the seven-storey Boksburg Civic Centre.

It is suggested she was thinking about taking her life, allegedly to escape domestic abuse.

The Edenvalle High School Grade 10 learner Naledi Masemola left municipal workers and passers-by reeling with shock after falling to her death from the rooftop of the council building on the afternoon of April 16.

Her funeral service was held on April 22 at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Kwa-Thema, Springs.

According to her father, Tshepo Masemola, who is divorced from the child’s mother, about a week before the incident his daughter hinted she was planning to take her own life.

He said Naledi sent him a WhatsApp saying she was not planning to live anymore.

The father believes this emanates from the apparent prolonged abuse the girl was being subjected to.

Boksburg police did not confirm this, saying the circumstances surrounding the death of the girl are still under investigation.

Masemola described his daughter as a brilliant and creative child.

“When she visited me and we’d sit together she always wanted to create things and would tell me what she would use to do so. Naledi always wanted to become a paediatrician,” said the father.

According to him, the child lived in Kwa-Thema.
