Off-duty municipal official arrested after shooting in Mossel Bay

An off-duty municipal officer is set to appear in court on Monday, after a shooting at The Point beachfront area.

A man was shot during an incident in Point Road, at The Point beachfront area in Mossel Bay last night.

According to Mossel Bay Advertiser, local police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says Mossel Bay Police Station officers arrested a 37-year-old suspect on an attempted murder charge after the shooting, which took place at about 22:30.

Spies adds: “According to reports available at this stage, two men were involved in an altercation, when a shot was fired. The 34-year-old victim sustained a gunshot wound to the body and was taken to a medical facility nearby by ambulance.

“The 37-year-old man was later taken into custody on arrival at the Mossel Bay Police Station.

“He remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”

Spies says police also confiscated a 9mm pistol, which is a licensed firearm.

Mossel Bay Advertiser was informed by a source that the alleged shooter in this incident is reportedly a municipal law enforcement officer. The publication contacted Mossel Bay Municipality for comment.

The municipality responded, stating: “The Mossel Bay Municipality is aware of a shooting incident, allegedly involving an off-duty municipal official and a member of the public.

“The municipality has been informed that the suspect is in police custody and that a court appearance is scheduled for early next week.”
