Off-duty municipal official in Mossel Bay court after shooting

A Mossel Bay officer faces an attempted murder charge after a beachfront shooting, with the victim reportedly in stable condition.

A Mossel Bay Municipality law enforcement officer appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday after allegedly shooting a man at The Point beachfront area on Friday night.

According to Mossel Bay Advertiser, the officer, Thabo Mabunda (37), was off duty at the time of the incident and faces a charge of attempted murder.

Local police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says the shooting occurred at 22:30. According to reports, two men were involved in an altercation when a shot was fired.

The victim, a 34-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a nearby medical facility. Sources have confirmed that the victim is in stable condition.

Mossel Bay Police Station officers responded to the scene and confiscated a licensed 9mm firearm.

On Saturday, Mossel Bay Municipality confirmed awareness of the shooting, describing it as ‘allegedly involving an off-duty municipal official and a member of the public’.

Further questions were sent to the municipality yesterday following Mabunda’s court appearance.

He is set to appear in court again tomorrow for a formal bail application.
