Two uniformed Gauteng traffic wardens were arrested in Northmead, Benoni, on June 3.

According to the Benoni CPF, information was circulating about a silver Renault Kwid sought in connection with theft and extortion, reports Benoni City Times.

“It was alleged that the female and male officers were targeting foreign nationals, demanding to see their passports and related documentation,” said Anton Koen of NoJack Vehicle Tracking, who played a role in apprehending the suspects. “Victims were reportedly threatened with arrest if they were only able to produce photocopies of their documentation or were ordered to pay a fine of R4 000.”

Koen added: “With the use of licence plate recognition cameras dotted across the city, the vehicle was spotted in Northmead and tactically brought to a stop by Benoni SAPS, NoJack units, as well as members of Trio Risk Management and Consulting, in Bunyan Street at 14:15.

“It is alleged that the duo were active throughout Benoni, Boksburg and Brakpan. A thorough search of their vehicle led to the discovery of dagga, three suspected stolen passports, as well as suspected stolen ID documentation.”

Benoni SAPS confirmed that the suspects are Gauteng traffic wardens.

The CPF extended their appreciation to the SAPS and private local security for their quick response in apprehending the suspects.

Investigations into the matter are underway. Anyone with more information or who may have fallen victim to these crimes is urged to report it to the nearest police station.
